What Student Life in China Actually Feels Like

When people ask me what living in China is like, I usually tell them that the first few days and the second month feel like two completely different experiences.

The First Few Days

At the beginning, simple things can feel confusing. You need your SIM card, payment apps, university registration, dorm setup and campus Wi-Fi. You need to understand how people order food, call a car, use public transport and receive online orders. China is extremely digital, which is very convenient after you set everything up, but it can feel strange when you have just arrived.

Once You Settle In

After that, daily life becomes much easier. Mobile payments are everywhere. Public transport in major cities is usually practical. Ride-hailing is easy. Food delivery is fast. Most campuses have canteens, supermarkets, sports facilities, clinics and parcel stations, so a lot of your daily needs are close to you.

The Language Question

The language question is also more balanced than people make it sound. You can study in an English-taught program without being fluent in Chinese. But learning basic Chinese changes your experience completely. It helps with food, taxis, dorm problems, hospitals, shopping and making local friends. Even knowing numbers, directions and a few useful phrases makes a difference.

Halal Food for Muslim Students

For Muslim students, halal food is available in many Chinese cities, but you should always research the exact area around your university. A city may have many halal restaurants overall, while a specific campus might have only a few nearby options.

Every City Is Different

Another thing students underestimate is how different Chinese cities are. Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Guangzhou and Harbin do not feel the same. The climate, cost of living, pace of life and international environment can change a lot.

The best preparation is to research the exact campus and neighborhood, not just the country. That gives you a much more realistic idea of what your everyday student life will actually be like.
